Windmill Generator For Home – Homemade Vs Commercial

A Commercial Windmill Generator May Be Sleek, Quite, and Efficient… But

When I’m talking about a commercial windmill generator I mean one for residential use, not to be confused with the much larger industrial wind turbines, like the giants you see on the California coastline. The smaller commercial windmill generator is for residential or isolated grid applications. They may come in many different designs but they all have one thing in common. They all cost a heck of a lot!

If your looking to supplement electricity, and don’t want to spend thousands, maybe you should consider a DIY approach to build a wind generator for your home.

One Of The Setbacks To DIYing a Wind Generator Opposed To Commercial Approach

Commercial windmill generators obviously have a cost setback, but the DIY approach has it’s own setbacks. When you spend thousands to have a commercial unit installed, usually the complete installation is handled. When you take a DIY approach you need to handle everything yourself. One of the hardest parts about windmill installation is the tower. When your talking about a windmill generator of sufficient enough size to supplement electricity for your home, your going to start at a 35′ tower. You need to get that windmill into the wind stream, or it’s not going to do you much good.

One of the most common overlooked and the most complicated parts about windmills, is the tower. You have to figure out how high your windmill generator needs to be. A common rule is 20′ above any surrounding obstacle but that’s not always an option. However if your willing to take on a tower, then you can literally save yourself thousands of dollars. You could then use the thousands saved to produce another windmill generator, and then your on to supplementing a good amount of power. I like the Gin pole hinged tower design. It makes maintenance a breeze, and it’s much more comfortable than being 40′ in the air working on my windmills.
